Education

B.A. English Literature at University of Virginia (GPA: 3.8, 2006), TEFL Certificate (earned 2006), M.F.A. University of Houston (GPA: 4.0, 2011).

Experience

A quick summary: I have been teaching for 7 years (6 at the college level), 6 of those spent tutoring. I specialize in tutoring high school through college/adult learners (though also enjoy tutoring younger learners), and am also qualified to tutor those working with English as a second/foreign language. If you think I might be a good fit for you, now for the longer version =). I have been teaching in various capacities for the last 7 years, and have loved every minute of it. After completing my undergrad, I went to Prague, CZ, and earned a TEFL certificate which trained me to teach/tutor any individual if English is their second/foreign language. I stayed in Prague for a year and taught English as a foreign language as a full-time tutor in homes, offices, and other public spaces - my students were ages 6-60, all professions and walks of life. After Prague, I went to work in Houston, TX earning my MFA in Poetry, and in the process I also taught English Composition and tutored in their Writing Center for 2 of the 3 years I was there. My summer work during that period included leading poetry workshops at the University of Houston for a writing conference, and also teaching high school summer prep at Philips Academy Andover in Massachusetts (in debate and English as a second language). I then worked as a full-time English professor at San Jacinto College in Houston, and tutored in their Writing Center for those same 2 years as well. Here in Columbia, I am currently teaching 2 sections of English Composition - one at MU, one at Stephens College - and a section of British Literature at Stephens. In addition, I am working 10 hours a week as a tutor at their Writing Center. I am 28, have about 6 years of tutoring experience under my belt total, and I love it. Teaching writing, reading, and literature is deeply rewarding and inspiring to me, and I particularly love tutoring/teaching students who are new to English as a language! I am extremely comfortable and highly experienced tutoring high school through college/adults in the above subjects, but I'd also be very willing to help tutor younger students if you feel I would be a good fit for your family!

Hobbies

So you have a little personal background, I grew up all over the world as my parents were in the State Department - Canada, Belgium, and the U.S. I have always loved reading, writing and poetry, and they have translated into my life's work so far, such as it is =) So between lesson planning, I spend a lot of time gobbling up new literature! I also adore film (have been a huge film buff since I was a kid), dance, the outdoors around Columbia, and spending time with my fiancee who is earning his PhD here at MU. We both care very deeply about establishing a rich, peaceful, intellectual life together, and we constantly reinforce our determination to do well in our chosen fields. When I'm not reading/lesson planning with him, hiking through Columbia, or dancing, I am likely writing my own poetry which is always a work in progress =)
