Private tutor in Columbia, MO

Education

I received my Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri's School of Law, and now work for the University of Missouri. I received my B.A. in Anthropology, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Georgia.

Experience

I have tutored English and writing for over nine years, and specialize in helping students from middle school to college drastically improve their writing in short periods of time. I love my day job, but continue tutoring because I am passionate about helping students improve their writing. I have worked with students of many ages and with international students, but I believe I have been most successful with middle school and high school age students who have low confidence in their writing skills - whether because of a learning disability or just because they have always disliked writing. My goal is always to teach with the goal of building writing confidence, an ingredient I think is often missing in the traditional classroom, particularly for students with disabilities. I want every student to come away from my lessons with not only the strategies and techniques that work best for them individually, but also empowered by the belief that they can tackle any future writing project long after they no longer need my tutoring. I love writing, but I understand that it is not easy because it was not always easy for me. In high school and most of college, I often meandered my way through writing assignments and struggled with even short essays. My experiences in law school and in legal practice, however, forced me to drastically change the processes I had always used to write. I became a student of the writing process, and I now use the many techniques I have found to help my students overcome their difficulties with writing in the way that works best for him or her individually. I enjoy motivating students to learn new skills by making writing fun, and I would welcome the opportunity to work with you or your child.
